Union Star, weighing in at 1,400 tons and on its maiden voyage, lost power after seawater seeped into her fuel tanks on 19 December. Captain Henry ‘Mick’ Moreton was mindful of veering ever closer to the rocky Cornish coast and of the presence on board of his family.

At first it seemed the lifeboat would not be necessary that night. A Sea King helicopter from RAF Culdrose was scrambled to pick up the passengers. A Dutch salvage tug was also heading towards Union Star, ready to bring it under tow. But as winds continued to increase, the helicopter found it impossible to engineer a rescue. Even at 400 feet it was being washed down with sea spray. The rest of the story is best told through the clipped radio messages sent and received across the sea – and heard by lifeboat crew’s families on scanners in Mousehole.
